Discover Bombay Palace

Walking into Bombay Palace at 6 Crendon St, High Wycombe HP13 6LW, United Kingdom, you immediately catch the aroma of toasted cumin, cardamom, and charcoal from the tandoor. I’ve dined here several times over the past year, both for relaxed weeknight dinners and a lively birthday celebration, and each visit has felt consistently warm and satisfying. The dining room strikes a balance between classic Indian décor and modern comfort, making it equally suitable for a casual curry night or a small family gathering.

On my most recent visit, I brought along two friends who are particular about authentic Indian cuisine. We started with onion bhajis and chicken tikka. The bhajis arrived crisp and golden, not greasy, with a delicate crunch that gave way to soft, spiced onions inside. The chicken tikka had clearly been marinated for hours in yogurt, garlic, and garam masala before being cooked in the clay oven. According to culinary research from organizations like the Food Standards Agency in the UK, proper marination not only enhances flavor but also improves tenderness and food safety when handled correctly. You can taste that care in every bite here.

The menu is extensive without feeling overwhelming. You’ll find staples such as butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, biryani, and a variety of vegetarian curries like saag paneer and chana masala. What stands out is how the chefs layer spices. Instead of overpowering heat, the dishes build flavor gradually. When I ordered the lamb rogan josh, the sauce carried a deep tomato base enriched with Kashmiri chili, offering warmth rather than aggressive spice. My friend opted for a vegetable biryani, and the rice grains were separate and aromatic, mixed with fresh herbs and lightly caramelized onions.

In terms of portion size, Bombay Palace is generous. One practical example: during a team dinner I organized for six colleagues, we ordered a selection of mains to share along with naan and pilau rice. Even with hearty appetites, we had leftovers packed neatly to take home. The staff handled our large table smoothly, checking in at just the right moments without hovering. That level of service matters. Studies published by hospitality groups such as UKHospitality consistently show that attentive yet unobtrusive service significantly improves customer satisfaction scores in restaurant reviews. From my experience, this place lives up to that standard.

Another strength is dietary flexibility. The team is knowledgeable about allergens and vegetarian options, and they’re happy to adjust spice levels on request. When one of my friends mentioned a mild intolerance to dairy, the server clearly explained which curries were cream-based and suggested tomato or coconut-based alternatives. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially in a time when more diners are mindful about ingredients and sourcing.

Location-wise, being right in High Wycombe makes it convenient for both locals and visitors exploring Buckinghamshire. It’s close enough to central amenities that you can pair dinner with a stroll through town. Parking nearby is generally manageable, although on busy weekend evenings it’s wise to book in advance. From what I’ve observed, Friday and Saturday nights fill up quickly, largely driven by positive word-of-mouth and steady online reviews praising the food quality and friendly staff.

Pricing feels fair for the quality delivered. You’re not paying luxury London rates, yet the cooking demonstrates genuine skill. The tandoori dishes have that slight smokiness that’s hard to replicate without a proper clay oven, and the curries avoid the overly sweet or oily profiles that sometimes plague takeaway spots. While I can’t personally verify every ingredient source, the freshness of the herbs and vegetables suggests a reliable supply chain.

If you’re scanning through restaurant reviews looking for a dependable Indian restaurant in High Wycombe, this spot deserves attention. Between the thoughtful menu, consistent flavors, and welcoming service, it delivers an experience that feels both authentic and approachable.

  • We visited Bombay Palace for the first time on Wednesday and loved it so much, that we cancelled reservations we had for Thursday night elsewhere, and booked here again, instead! One of the waiters, Dulon, was incredibly attentive and ensured that we had everything we needed alongside taking the time to get to know us and share stories. The other waiters within the establishment were just as wonderful and would check in with us too. The food was incredible and we all agreed that it is the best Indian food we have ever tasted. We all ordered different dishes and were so impressed we were sharing with each other so we could taste all the options. In particular, the fish was cooked to perfection as well as the meat, especially the lamb. We would highly recommend, the atmosphere is enjoyable and relaxing, the staff are friendly and attentive and the decor is beautiful. Thank you very much!

  • Booking a table was very simple and easy to do. Paul greeted and seated us and very intently looked after us. I had the chicken makhuni curry which i highly recommend with the coconut rice and garlic naan. Food was full of flavour and was fresh. The choice of larger is good allso with a choice of either kingfisher or cobra wich are equally as good. I highly recommend this place and i will be returning soon

  • Had a great 50yr school rugby reunion here as a large sit down party and the service team handled it very well. Drinks kept coming, they gave us time to catch up and chat and weren’t pestering us every 5 mins to order. When the food came out it was really good, good naan and everyone seemed very happy with their food and portion size. Deffo would come here for a curry night out in a group.

  • The best Curry you will eat!, every single person I bring here loves it and becomes a instant fan. The staff are fantastic, recently I celebrated my Birthday with 40 people from all over the country at Bombay Palace, they dealt with everyone so quickly and manage the whoel group along with the rest of the restaurant so everyone ate at the same time, it was amazing and everyone left raving about the food. Can't recommend this place enough ! Charlie

  • Thoroughly enjoyable first visit for a midweek double date. We travelled to Bombay palace from princes Risborough after hearing sound reviews. Entering the restaurant it was aesthetically very pleasing. A warm welcome and swiftly shown to our table. Plenty of seating within for what I’m sure are busy Friday and Saturday nights. The staff were all very well mannered and attentive. You could see the experience and quiet confidence in how they looked after us throughout the evening . Drinks ordered and delivered before the poppadoms which is always a big tick from me. Drinks well chilled, poppadoms and dips all fresh and crisp. A great start. Perusing the menu there were plenty of options for all tastes and a good range of new/house dishes to read through. As a table of 4 we ordered chicken naga, chicken dansak, king prawn tawa, king prawn khatta mitha, pilau rice, mushroom rice, sag bhaji, sag paneer, begun bhaji, keema naan, garlic naan, peshwari naan. Tastebuds now positively tingling with anticipation. Poppodoms were cleared in advance and hot plates delivered. Drinks refreshed, the mains were delivered on the house cart. Everything was presented beautifully and laid out on the table. The aromas filled our senses and we couldn’t wait to tuck in. Every dish had individual character. Deep thoughtful flavourings. In comparison, some establishments overuse the same curry base for most or all dishes but I must say with this meal everything on our table had its own uniqueness. The stand out dish for me was the king prawn khatta mitha. Perfectly cooked prawns and a creamy well spiced sauce that paired perfectly with shellfish. I could highlight and recommend any of the dishes served to us. Execution was on point. Well done chef. Plates and table cloth cleared as we entered the twilight of our evening and we were then served a complimentary drink for a perfect end to a perfect meal. Congratulations Bombay palace. A real gem of a restaurant we will be sure to visit again.
